Field Marks: 5 in. A common warbler found in stands of spruce and fir in the boreal forest; also inhabits mixed coniferous-deciduous forest. Forages actively, high in the center of tree canopy, making it hard to observe. Often fans tail. Breeding males blackish above with white eyebrow, black mask, white wing patch, yellow rump, and large white tail patches; throat and underparts yellow, breast and sides streaked with black. Females duller, less black below and with less white in wing. Winter adults and immatures grayish-olive above; underparts yellow, with faint side streaks and narrow, pale gray breast band. Song a short, rising, hurried "wee-o wee-o wee-chy;" call note a flat "tlep."
Range: Breeds across Canada, South to Great Lakes region, New England, and locally in mountains to Pennsylvania and Virginia. Winters in Central America.
